چکیده

We present photometry and spectroscopy of the soft x-ray transient Aql X-1. Optical photometry during an active state shows a strong (0.6 mag peak-to-peak) modulation at a period of 19 hours. Infrared (K-band) photometry during a quiescent state limits any ellipsoidal variations to < 0.07 mag (peak-to-peak), which implies an inclination i < 31 (90% limit). Spectroscopy in a quiescent state shows at most very small radial velocity variations, which implies a very low inclination of i < 12 (90% limit). The low inclination is rather unexpected given the large photometric modulation seen in the active state. The upper limit to the equivalent width of the anomalous Li 6707Å line is < 0.3Å, which is similar to the measured strength of this line in several other x-ray transients. Persistent Pulsations in Aql X - 1 as it Fades into Quiescence

– 2 – ABSTRACT We searched for coherent X-ray pulsations from Aql X-1 in a series of RXTE observations taken shortly after a recent outburst. During the course of these observations, Aql X-1 passes through an apparent " propeller " phase as its lumi-nosity fades to its quiescent value. No pulsations were detected, and we place upper limits (ranging from 0.52% to 9.0%) on the fractional RMS ampl...

Aquila X-1 from Outburst to Quiescence: the Onset of the Propeller Effect and Signs of a Turned-on Rotation-powered Pulsar

We report on the March-April 1997 BeppoSAX observations of Aql X-1, the first to monitor the evolution of the spectral and time variability properties of a neutron star soft X–ray transient from the outburst decay to quiescence. We observed a fast X–ray flux decay, which brought the source luminosity from ∼ 1036 to ∼ 1033 ergs−1 in less than 10 days. The X–ray spectrum showed a power law high e...

Prediction of Supersoft X-ray Phase, Helium Enrichment, and Turn-off Time in Recurrent Nova Ci Aquilae 2000 Outburst

Recurrent nova CI Aquilae is still bright 300 days after the optical maximum, showing the slowest evolution among recurrent novae. We predict the turn-off time of CI Aql 2000 outburst coming in August 2001 after a supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase lasts 250 days. We also predict helium enrichment of ejecta, He/H∼ 0.25 by number. Observational confirmations are urgently required. Based on the o...

No Persistent Pulsations in Aquila X-1 as It Fades into Quiescence

We searched for coherent X-ray pulsations from Aql X-1 in a series of RXT E observations taken shortly after a recent outburst. No pulsations were detected, and we place upper limits (ranging from 0.52% to 9.0%) on the fractional rms amplitude of any ...

The Orbital Light Curve of Aquila X-1

We obtained Rand I-band CCD photometry of the soft X-ray transient/neutron-star binary Aql X-1 in 1998 June while it was at quiescence. We Ðnd that its light curve is dominated by ellipsoidal variations, although the ellipsoidal variations are severely distorted and have unequal maxima. After we correct for the contaminating Ñux from a Ðeld star located only away, the peak-to-peak amplitude 0A....
